Find A Support System

The most successful people in the world have the best support systems. The scenario repeats itself over and over again in various fields:

  • The late Steve Jobs who was surrounded by an amazing team of engineers at Apple

  • The world’s best golfer, Rory McIlroy, has a huge team around him that includes his family, caddie, swing coach, plus many more

  • Carlos Slim, one of world’s richest men, is surrounded by an incredible team of people to help him manage his massive telecom business

Whether you are aiming to lose weight or gain weight, the program you decide to do will be more successful when your friends and family help to support your decision. Building the body of your dreams requires more than nutritional knowledge and hard work in the gym. You must surround yourself with the right people who can provide you with the following three key “extras”:

  1. Mentorship

  2. Support

  3. Accountability

So, how many of the above do you need? One? All three? If you don’t have a mentor, find one in the form of a personal trainer or someone who has already been through the process you are about to embark on. If you don’t have a support system rally your friends to join you, or recruit like-minded people at your local gym to start a support group. If you don’t have someone to be accountable to, finding a mentor and/or support group will take care of that.

There is whole field dedicated to the study of health and social networks. The amount of power and reach the social network effect has is quite amazing. For example, if our friends are obese, we are 45% more likely to also be obese. There is no question that the people you spend time with are critical in your own growth and development as a person. It is no different when you are driving to attain your health and fitness goals – your support system is crucial!
